Broadcast News Producing Lesson – Day One

TARGET
Students will understand the different types of stories that make up a newscast and the criteria that producers look for when stacking a news show.

OBJECTIVES
- Level 1 (Basic) understanding the different types of stories that make up a newscast
- Level 2 (Proficient) application of understanding of newsworthiness and types of stories in a newscast
MATERIALS NEEDED
- News Producing PowerPoint Day 1
- Teacher’s choice: a newscast of your choosing that you have observed and classified so that you can help your students observe and classify
- Newscast Classification sheet
VERIFICATION
Steps to check for student understanding
- Teacher will do frequent comprehension checks in the form of Classroom Assessment Techniques (thumbs up, thumbs down; exit slip in the form of post-it note summary).
- Students can submit the Individual learning activities for assessment.
FLOW OF LESSON
- Suggested bell ringer: How do you get your news? If you watch a local channel, which one and why do you choose that one?
- Teacher will present the PowerPoint.
- Teacher will distribute the Newscast Classification Sheet.
- Teacher will show the newscast and the students will attempt to classify the different stories
- Students will share out and discuss their classifications
- Teacher will assign each student a local network and ask the student to watch the evening newscast and fill out the Newscast Classification Sheet. The goal will be to have various students evaluate the same newscast so that there can be discussion the next day about the classification.

Where is the PowerPoint? None of them download. As a teacher, that’s a bummer. As a student, that sucks!
