Students will understand the different types of stories and how to flesh out a story to check for relevance to audience.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Level 1 (Basic) understanding of how to generate a story idea and the different forms of stories
  2. Level 1 (Basic) application of determining relevance to audience.

MATERIALS NEEDED

  1. PowerPoint Story Ideas Day 2
  2. Funnel Graphic Organizer

VERIFICATION
Steps to check for student understanding

  1. Teacher will do frequent comprehension checks in the form of Classroom Assessment Techniques (thumbs up, thumbs down; exit slip in the form of post-it note summary)
  2. Funnel graphic organizer can be turned as a homework assignment to check for understanding.

FLOW OF LESSON

  1. Suggested bell ringer: Share a bit of what you found out on your audience survey. Who IS our audience?
  2. Teacher will present PowerPoint
  3. Students will take notes.
  4. Teacher will introduce the funnel graphic organizer. The point is to help students take a topic that is broad and help slowly break it apart to check for relevance to your audience.
  5. Students will get a chance to brainstorm a topic and use the graphic organizer in class.

  1. Exit slip: Why type of stories do you think will be most suited to our audience and why?
