TARGET
Students will apply and use the Maestro approach to a news story

EDUCATION METHODS

  1. Teacher will do a visual walk-through of the Maestro graphic organizer with students.
  2. Students will work independently.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Level 2 (Proficient) application of the Maestro method.

MATERIALS NEEDED

  1. Maestro Graphic organizer
  2. Beyond Maestro question sheet

VERIFICATION
Steps to check for student understanding

  1. Teacher will do frequent comprehension checks in the form of Classroom Assessment Techniques (thumbs up, thumbs down; exit slip in the form of post-it note summary)
  2. Beyond Maestro question sheet for individuals
  3. Maestro graphic organizer for group.

FLOW OF LESSON

  1. Suggested bell ringer: Do you think it is important to deliver information to a person in the way that is easiest for you as the journalist or easiest for them as the reader? Why? How might you achieve balance?
  2. Teacher will project Maestro graphic organizer and do a walk-through, explaining the steps for filling it out.
  3. Teacher will split the class into groups to actually work the Maestro method while closely monitoring their progress and ability to stay on task.
  4. Teacher will inform students that they need to make copies of the Maestro so that each person in the group can take one home.
  5. Teacher will assign Beyond Maestro as Individual Learning Activity.

  1. Exit slip: For you, as a news consumer, how do prefer to receive your news: listening, reading, watching or a combination of all three?
